Uri Geller and the story of a collective fraud

The name “Uri Geller” was very popular in the 70’s, when the new philosophy wave was on its way. At that time, people were very susceptible to various types of supernatural phenomena. In fact, people thought that paranormal activity was very trendy.

Uri Geller took advantage of this collective view. The way he used to deceive people has been seen as legendary. Millions of people around the world believed in his powers, which made him a successful millionaire. In fact, he still has followers all over the world.

It can be difficult to understand how a single person can deceive so many. Uri Geller is one of the most famous illusionists, but he is not the only one who has succeeded in such actions. Many political and religious leaders do the same. Even salespeople are fooling potential customers.

Uri Geller was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1946. Geller says that when he was four years old, he saw a large flash of light in the sky that hit him with energy and made him unconscious. Then he went home for lunch. When he picked up a spoon to eat, he broke it with his bare hands.

His family moved to Cyprus when he was 11 years old. He lived there until he was 17. After that he did his military service and became a parachutist. He fought in the Six Day War and was wounded in battle. He then became a model.

After being a model, he started doing magic shows at small nightclubs around Israel. It did not take long for him to become famous. Unlike other magicians, Uri Geller claimed to have supernatural powers. He became especially famous for his ability to bend spoons and to stop or speed up the hands on a clock.

It did not take long for Uri Celler to become a celebrity. He was invited as a guest to TV shows around the world. Geller did his tricks with each participant. He also showed off his telepathic “gifts.” He asked his assistants to draw something and then drew the drawing himself without having seen the original.

Everyone was fascinated by him. He became so popular and well-known that even the CIA liked him. According to released CIA documents, he was invited by the CIA so that they could test his powers. They locked him in a room and he had to draw the same drawing that some CIA agents had drawn several thousand miles away. At the end of the test, they determined that he had supernatural powers and he started working for the CIA.

Although he was so famous and popular, the magician and illusionist James Randi did not believe him. He was a co-founder and member of The Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, an organization whose purpose was to dispel myths about pseudo-scientific phenomena.

Randi always said that the trick with the spoons was simple and something that even a child could do. The difference lay in the marketing that Geller used to create his collective illusion.

In 1973, James Randi got Johnny Carson to invite Uri Geller to his show. Randi asked Geller to carry out his routine, but under different conditions. First and foremost, he did not let Geller use the spoons he had brought with him. He gave Geller new spoons. He also did not let him choose who would draw the drawings, which he would then redraw.

Geller failed to prove his “supernatural” powers. He did not bend any spoons and did not manage to recreate any drawings. Geller said that they pressured him too much and that this blocked his powers. He then sued Randi, who sued him back and won the case after many years.

This was not the only time Geller’s “powers” had disappeared. He once said he would stop Big Ben in London, but nothing happened. He said the same thing about the Puerta del Sol in Madrid, but he did not do anything there either. Despite all this, many believe in Geller and his powers. In fact, he is still on TV and claims to have supernatural powers.
